The 2002 Can-Am Challenge was the first is a series of SCRABBLE tournaments between top players from the United States and Canada. It was held at the Park Plaza Hotel in Niagara Falls, Ontario, on November 16th-17th, 2002.
Can-Am 2002, written by Joel Wapnick and Brian Sheppard, includes 17 annotated games from the tournament, an introduction by Zev Kaufman, originator of the Can-Am concept, and chapters dealing with computer simulation, score plus rack leave evaluation, endgame performance, individual and team performance evaluations, and how to use simulation to analyze playing errors. It also includes records of the 55 games played but not annotated, and a glossary of SCRABBLE terms.
A feature of Can-Am 2002 is the presentation of a diagram for every move. This enables the reader to follow the games without having to set up his SCRABBLE set.
Can-Am 2002 is available both as a book (a limited number of copies remain) and, coming soon, as an ebook. The ebook will include addenda and corrections to analyses of the 17 annotated gems and will include plays that were possible after the official word list updates made in 2006 and 2014.
